Inspired by its Building Homes with Heart philosophy, Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) welcomed the Year of the Dog with the elderly from Central Western, Islands and Yau Tsim Mong districts through caring actions.  Apart from givng out lucky gift bags, the Group invited 1,700 seniors to the poon choi lunches at Noah’s Ark, which is in its eighth consecutive year, on 4 March and 18 March.  The lunches were officiated by Secretary for Labour and Welfare Dr. Law Chi-kwong, Director of Social Welfare Ms. Carol Yip, SHKP Executive Director and Deputy Managing Director Mr. Mike Wong and SHKP Executive Director Mr. Adam Kwok who were present to offer their best wishes to the elderly.

Lunches Featured With Vitality and Warmth

The events had a bustling, jubilant atmosphere.  The seniors got to enjoy not only a lavish lunch but also bags of heartwarming and useful gifts.  Some of them put on incredible performances at the talent show, including singing, dancing, djembe drumming and playing handchimes while enjoying a joyful day with all the attendees.  In addition to serving as officiating guests, Mr. Mike Wong and Mr. Adam Kwok also presented red packets to the eldest participants to offer them best wishes for a happy Lunar New Year.  The six seniors who are nearly a hundred years old are all energetic and mentally sharp, and they greatly appreciated the care SHKP has shown them.  So Hung, a 100-year-old lady from Tung Chung, revealed that her secret to longevity is to always stay happy.  She said it was her first time visiting Noah’s Ark and getting together with a thousand other people truly warmed the cockles of her heart.

Mr. Mike Wong and Mr. Adam Kwok were pleased to enjoy the feast with the elderly.  They noted that SHKP, as a property developer that calls Hong Kong its home, is delighted to give back to the city.  This includes caring and helping the needy by paying regular visits to disadvantaged families and elderly and by helping them with urgent home renovation and household repair needs as part of the Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative.  SHKP distributed over 7,000 lucky gift bags to seniors during the Chinese New Year to spread love throughout the community.

Dr. Law Chi-kwong and Ms. Carol Yip extended their appreciations to SHKP for sponsoring, initiating and organising the poon choi lunches, and having over a hundred volunteers help at the events to foster inter-generational harmony.  Dr. Law Chi-kwong noted that the government will make continued efforts to enhance care for the elderly under the policy direction of “giving priority to the provision of home care and community care, supplemented by residential care.”  Ms. Carol Yip said building a caring, age-friendly community relies not only on government resources and policies but also the collaboration of social welfare partners, businesses and all sectors of the society.

SHKP has held the annual poon choi lunches for seniors in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City, Kwai Tsing, Wong Tai Sin, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Wan Chai, Sha Tin, Central Western, Islands and Yau Tsim Mong districts since 2011.  These events and related home visits in tandem with dozens of social service agencies have benefited more than 46,000 people over the years.

Noah’s Ark, where the poon choi lunches took place, is the world’s first theme park with a full-scale replica of the vessel in the ancient story.  The park is on the tranquil Ma Wan Island and offers sweeping views of the Tsing Ma Bridge and Rambler Channel away from the bustle of the city.  The many attractions of Noah’s Ark include an Ark Garden, Ark Expo, Treasure House, Ark Life Education House and the new Solar Tower.  The combination of play, educational tours and conservation promotes love, harmony and positive values throughout the community, and offers a new experience for international visitors.
