SHKP’s Kai Shing and Hong Yip win Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence

2017-05-18

Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited’s (SHKP) property management subsidiaries Hong Yip and Kai Shing won a number of 2016 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, marking the eighth year that saw SHKP’s subsidiaries receiving golds since the awards began in 2008. East Point City mall earned a gold award in the commercial & industrial category.  Residential awards included silver for Aegean Coast and bronze for Manhattan Hill, plus certificates of merit for seven other developments in different categories.  The awards honour outstanding green initiatives and are the latest recognition of a long-standing commitment to environmental care.

Gold for East Point City partnership with tenants

East Point City mall under Kai Shing won gold in the commercial & industrial category with a range of ‘East Point City Loves the Earth’ environmental initiatives for tenants and visitors.   As part of a sustainable partnership with tenants, management staff designed a green Recycle Train to collect recyclables from mall tenants that has been widely embraced with rising volumes collected over the years.  A smart car-park system makes it easier for motorists to park and retrieve their cars, cutting unnecessary mileage and carbon emissions in addition to the power-saving installations in the car park for energy efficiency. The mall has programmes for the public including a Little Green Academy for kindergarteners, and visiting elderly people at home to encourage practices like waste separation.  The award judges were impressed by the commitment to nurturing green habits among the public over the years.

Silver to Aegean Coast for upcycling

Aegean Coast managed by Kai Shing won silver in the residential category for a number of ‘Go Green Together’ projects.  Residents are encouraged to do organic gardening on moveable fields and there are programmes recycling food waste into fertilizer and kitchen oil into fuel for the estate and the neighbourhood.  In addition to working with green groups to collect over 30 kinds of recyclables, estate staff also made furniture from scrap material for use in the clubhouse’s Green Garden educational area.  The furniture also became part of a book corner and mobile ‘eco-kitchen’ to spread the message.  The judges appreciated how these programmes promote recycling to residents and the larger community.

Bronze for saving paper with IT at Manhattan Hill

Hong Yip’s Royal Elite at Manhattan Hill won bronze in the residential category for significantly reducing paper use with their own digital tools such as a patrol record system and smartphone app to communicate with residents.  They also have a disposer to convert food waste they collect into fertilizer, either for residents’ use or for the estate gardens.  The award judges admired the team’s efficient use of resources and waste reduction in promoting care for the environment in residents and partners.    Manhattan Hill additionally has ISO14001 accreditation, an Indoor Air Quality Certificate (Excellent Class), Carbon Reduction Certificate to acknowledge its efforts in promoting green initiatives.

Leading awards in Hong Kong

The Environmental Campaign Committee and Environmental Protection Department give out Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence in conjunction with nine other bodies to recognize companies and organizations that are outstanding in environmental management over different categories.  The judges are representatives of chambers of commerce, the government and professional organizations, and they consider the effectiveness of green initiatives, training, distribution of resources, staff participation, incentives for supply chain to implement eco-friendly measures and educational and promotion efforts.  The awards are among the most prestigious in Hong Kong.
