SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation helps underprivileged students study at Xi’an Jiaotong University

2015-05-29

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation, charity arm of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP), will collaborate with Xi’an Jiaotong University on a scholarship scheme to help promising students with limited financial resources study at the university.  Foundation and university representatives met recently to discuss the charitable initiative.

Over 150 talented students with limited means will receive more than a million Hong Kong dollars in scholarships to study at Xi’an Jiaotong University under the scheme.  The Foundation will also encourage recipients to play an active role in social initiatives and help more people in need.

Xi’an Jiaotong University Party Committee Deputy Secretary Gong Hui expressed gratitude for the Foundation’s support, saying: “The university primarily admits students from the central and western regions, including members from ethnic minorities, as part of our effort to promote development in those areas, and many of them have deprived backgrounds.  The new scholarships will offer recipients relief from massive financial stress and encourage efforts for continuous improvement.  Xi’an Jiaotong University has also worked with internationally renowned universities recently to let students gain global perspectives by participating in joint scientific research, academic exchanges and more.”

SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation Executive Director Amy Kwok said: “Xi’an Jiaotong University is famous for engineering in China and beyond.  The university has undergone rapid development in recent years, with the establishment of national-level research platforms and international academic exchange networks that offer students comprehensive learning opportunities to acquire a creative mindset in science and technology.  The Foundation is committed to nurturing talented people and expects that promising but financially-challenged mainland students will be able to climb the social ladder and contribute to society after they finish their studies at Xi’an Jiaotong University.”

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation has been helping outstanding students with limited financial means complete undergraduate studies since it was set up in 2002, in line with its commitment to nurturing Hong Kong and mainland talent.  The Foundation offers scholarships at renowned institutions including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-sen University and Tianjin University.  It also provides grants to local education bureaus and subsidizes students to study abroad or join overseas exchange programmes to help them broaden their horizons.  More than 20 provinces have benefited from the over 30 training schemes conducted by the Foundation.
