SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation extends Shanghai Jiao Tong University scholarships

2015-01-08

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation, charity arm of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP), set up a scholarship programme for Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2007 to help undergraduate students with limited finances complete their studies.  The Foundation made a second endowment this year to bring the total number of scholarships under the programme to nearly 2,000, giving more underprivileged students a chance to pursue further education and contribute to society with the knowledge they gain.

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation’s first endowment to the scholarship programme for Shanghai Jiao Tong University has benefitted a number of students.  To continue the worthwhile initiative, the partners signed a second donation agreement in Hong Kong.  The two donation instalments have committed RMB 8 million to providing university educations to talented students from poor families, with many of the students expected to go on and study master’s or doctoral degrees.

Foundation Executive Director Amy Kwok said: “We are aware that some mainland students face financial problems and struggle to pay for their studies, which is why we set up scholarships to help them climb the social ladder through education.  We are delighted with how fast Shanghai Jiao Tong University is developing.  It has extensive national and global networks for academic exchange that encourage students to combine knowledge with innovation, promoting national and individual development.”

University President Zhang Jie thanked the Foundation for its continual support for the institution and underprivileged students, saying: “The Foundation cares about our development and helps cultivate talent for the country.  The scholarship benefits and motivates undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds at the same time it encourages academic exchanges and inter-cultural partnerships. We also collaborate with renowned universities around the world so our students can study abroad and broaden their international vision.”

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation has been committed to nurturing talent for the country since its establishment in 2002, subsidizing disadvantaged students with good potential so they can complete undergraduate studies.  It works with renowned institutions including the Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-sen University and Tianjin University, and provides grants to local education bureaus such as the one in Zhongshan.  The Foundation also subsidizes students to study abroad or join overseas exchange programmes to help them broaden their horizons, and has launched over 30 training schemes in more than 20 provinces.
