SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC
funds heart surgery for underprivileged children

2014-12-29

Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) staged the SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC in October 2014 and the donation was used to pay for operations on an initial eight underprivileged children with congenital heart disease.  Members of the mainland SHKP Volunteer Team and medical staff recently held a post-op party for the children, where they made cakes and received New Year presents.

The eight children who received subsidies through SHKP were between three months and 16 years old and from less-fortunate families in Zunyi, Guizhou.  All of them had congenital heart disease, which were beyond treatment because of the medical and economic conditions in Zunyi.  The treatment scheme was initiated by the China Communist Youth League Shanghai Committee and the Shanghai Association of Volunteers, and the cost of surgery was mainly paid for with funds raised in the SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC.  The operations were done at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and the children are now out of danger and on the road to recovery with healthy, happy lives ahead.

The hospital held a post-op party before the children’s discharge in time for New Year.  Members of the mainland SHKP Volunteer Team joined the children to make cakes and light candles for good luck.  The children presented the cakes they made to the doctors and nurses who treated them, as well as their parents, other patients and people who care for the community.  It was a touching scene full of love.

SHKP is dedicated to promoting healthy and sustainable living, reading and holistic development and care for the community through various means including the SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC held on October 26.  The event, which helped to encourage healthy living and caring for the less fortunate, attracted 1,200 athletes from the mainland and around the world who climbed 1,460 steps in Shanghai IFC Tower Two.  All money raised at the event was given to the Shanghai Children’s Health Foundation to fund the treatment of underprivileged children at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.  The money gives children hope and helps them back to health.  Money left over after surgery for the first eight patients will be used to help other underprivileged children in need, as the Group and its mainland SHKP Volunteer Team continue their charity efforts.
