SHKP Volunteer Team marks its tenth anniversary
2,200 volunteers put in over 500,000 hours of community service in ten years

2013-10-02

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) serves the community in keeping with its Building Homes with Heart ideal.  The SHKP Volunteer Team marks its tenth anniversary this year and a tenth anniversary recognition ceremony was held with Director of Social Welfare Carol Yip and SHKP Chairman and Managing Director Raymond Kwok presenting awards to the volunteers for outstanding efforts.  The Team has put in over 500,000 hours of service since it was set up.  It began with a few hundred members and has now grown to 2,200.

New Long-time Participation and Highest Total Hours of Service in Ten Years awards were also given to dedicated volunteers.  There were 16 volunteers who received Long-term Participation awards for being commended by the Social Welfare Department for the past ten years in a row.  One of them, Ho Yiu-tong, received a gold Highest Total Hours of Service in Ten Years award for putting in nearly 3,700 hours of service or an average 370 hours each year.

Mr Kwok said: “The Team undertakes a wide range of activities to help the needy.  It has become bigger and stronger over the past ten years and repeatedly set service hour records.  I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every volunteer for their dedication.  They reach out to those in need, realize our Building Homes with Heart ideal and help SHKP maintain close ties with people from all walks of life.  We are committed to serving the community and our managementspares no effort in volunteering with staff.”

Ms Yip said: “Many people have a busy lifestyle and the Team’s whole-hearted dedication is highly commended.  I encourage every volunteer to pass on the spirit of goodwill to their friends, relatives and the community at large and their caring efforts can spread positive energy to people.  I am looking forward to more and varied SHKP volunteering activities.”

The Team was formed in 2003 and has four service teams for home maintenance, senior care, youth and children development, and disabled care.  The Sunshine Team was set up in 2010 to promote positive energy, the spirit of caring for society and dedication among youth.

SHKP Volunteer Team Chief Leader Michelle Leung said: “Over the past ten years, the Team has worked with different organizations and put on over 600 volunteering events.  Most of these were visits initially, but long-term projects were introduced gradually to let volunteers better understand the needs of people and build deeper relationships.”

The Team’s major projects in recent years include relocation assistance with basic home decorations for seniors affected by public estate redevelopments and families in crisis, with staff volunteers using their construction and property management expertise to help the needy.  Staff members are encouraged to volunteer with their families, for example with a matching programme for volunteer families and needy seniors to make them feel cared for.   It also runs a mentoring scheme to promote personal development among disadvantaged youth and broaden their horizons.  Some of these young people joined the Sunshine Team and volunteer with SHKP staff.

In addition to commending outstanding volunteers, the recognition event also presented a review of the Team’s accomplishment in 2012.  Its total hours of service reached a record of 120,000.  A total of 354 volunteers (an increase of nearly 100 compared with previous year) received gold, silver or bronze awards from the Social Welfare Department for over 200, 100 and 50 hours of service and 34 volunteer families of SHKP employees were commended.
