Tianjin University delegation and SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation exchange views on mainland education

2012-11-08

SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation Executive Director Amy Kwok and Director Kwong Chun recently welcomed to Hong Kong a delegation led by Tianjin University Party Secretary Liu Jianping and Vice President Feng Yaqing to discuss the development of education on the mainland and financial assistance for disadvantaged students.

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation assists in developing talented mainland students, and committed a total of RMB 4 million to the Tianjin University scholarship programme in 2009 and 2010 to help deserving students suffering financial hardships to pursue degrees. The programme benefitted 800 students during the academic years 2009 to 2012, providing each student with RMB 5,000 annually.

Ms Kwok said: “Tianjin University is blessed with remarkable leadership and has pursued the noble goal of advancing higher education. Its academic and professional training programmes are in harmony with the mainland’s overall development and boasts international recognition of the faculty in the architecture and engineering departments. The Foundation has been providing financial aid to disadvantaged students since 2009 and 90 new scholarship recipients will graduate this year. We hope that the students perform well in their studies and contribute to the nation’s future while we look forward to continuing our support for Tianjin University’s students.”

Mr Liu thanked the Foundation for its long-time support. He believes that the programme makes a big difference by providing much needed assistance and encouragement to disadvantaged students in pursuit of higher education. The Foundation’s contributions also tie in with the mainland’s new matching funding policy, which allows the University to acquire more teaching resources. To this end, the University will continue to instil greater responsibility in students, while inspiring creative thinking with an international perspective.

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation was established in 2002 to oversee scholarship programmes and over 30 training projects at prestigious mainland institutions, including: Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-Sen University and Tongji University as well as the Zhongshan Education Bureau and other cities. It also offers scholarships for mainland students to study at renowned universities overseas. To date more than RMB 350 million has been granted to over 6,000 mainland students in over 20 provinces and cities.
