Barrier-free Facilities Caring Award for Ma Wan Park

2011-07-30

Ma Wan Park has won a Barrier-free Facilities Caring Award.  The park promotes love for life, family and the earth, and offers a barrier-free environment for the physically challenged.  It was built by Sun Hung Kai Properties and shows the developer’s sense of corporate social responsibility.

The People of Fortitude‧International Mutual-aid Association for the Disabled (POF) is a registered, non-profit organization that evaluates barrier-free accessibility and proposes ways to improve facilities.  It began the Barrier-free Facilities Caring awards this year to recognize socially-responsible companies that provide such access.

The Ma Wan Park Nature Garden covers 5.6 hectares and has elevated paths along the hills to preserve thousands of native trees.  A Hilltop Lookout offers visitors a commanding view of Ma Wan, and paths leading there are wheelchair friendly with gradients no steeper than 1:12.  The paths also have tactile guide path and signs for the visually impaired. The Park additionally took POF’s advice and added more disabled toilets and wheelchair ramps.

Ma Wan Park’s efforts earned it a Barrier-free Facilities Caring award, and it will continue offering a barrier-free environment to include disabled people in community activities.
