SHKP Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative
Chinese New Year millennial lunch for 2,000 seniors

2011-01-10

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) began its Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative recently with a millennial luncheon for almost 2,000 seniors. The banquet had 150 tables serving Chinese traditional basin food to celebrate the coming year of the rabbit in the Chinese calendar. Guests at the lunch had a collective age of over 100,000 years, and some have lived for nearly a century. The SHKP Volunteer Team is also going to deliver lucky bags and cheer to 6,000 needy seniors in the territory.

Delivering warmth

SHKP Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Patrick Chan said: “'Building Homes with Heart' means that SHKP supports charity and encourages staff to participate in social service, and we recently announced the Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative to provide quick relief to people in need. In addition to this millennial lunch, we will also provide basic repairs to less-fortunate people in public housing to give our staff an opportunity to give back to society. SHKP will additionally give short-term assistance to families in difficulty due to accidents or natural disasters.”

Celebrating with the elderly

The luncheon was organized with the Yuen Long District Council, Yuen Long District Office, Social Welfare Department, Yuen Long Town Hall and SHKP Volunteer Team under SHKP sponsorship. Local basin food was served to celebrate the coming lunar new year with about 2,000 seniors invited by ten charity groups. Hosting the lunch were Yuen Long District Council Chairman Leung Chi-cheung, Yuen Long District Officer Yeung Tak Keung, Hong Kong Police Yuen Long District Commander David Michael Cartwrigh, Yuen Long Environmental Hygiene Superintendent Wan Ho Kau, Yuen Long Social Welfare Officer Fu Tsun Hung, Yuen Long Town Hall Management Committee Chairman Tsang Hin Keung, Organizing Committee Chairman Tang Kwan Sing and SHKP Volunteer Team Chief Leader Michelle Leung and Director of Corporate Communications Margaret Ng.

SHKP contributes

Michelle Leung said: “Lunar new year is one of the most important Chinese festivals, so SHKP is sponsoring this lunch and offering lucky gift bags to the elderly for the festival. We are happy to see the seniors enjoy the food and time with us, and we hope to show our care and blessings.” The Volunteer Team will deliver lucky bags containing necessities like rice, cooking oil, noodles and medicine, along with scarves knitted by volunteers, to 6,000 elderly people in the territory.
