1,700 runners take stair challenge in SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC

2017-10-22

Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) held its SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Shanghai IFC today with 1,700 vertical running enthusiasts and top runners from around the world scaling 1,460 steps at Shanghai IFC Tower Two. Present at the start were Rick Man, Deputy General Manager of Sun Hung Kai Development (China), Yuan Zhifeng, Director of Environment and Culture Development Department, Shanghai Lujiazui Financial City Authority, Li Zhongyao, Chairman of Shanghai Children’s Health Foundation and Ji Qingying, Vice President of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, who together fired a gun to start the race.

The SHKP Vertical Run for Charity has been held for sixth consecutive years, raising over RMB27 million for child and youth services. The event is the largest of its kind by scale and number of participants in Shanghai. Registration fees, sponsorships and proceeds from charity sales will all go to the Shanghai Children’s Health Foundation as in years past. Lead-up carnivals including Step Up for Fun and Step Up for Love brought in more companies, celebrities and charity groups to rally behind impoverished children needing medical treatment.

Rick Man, Deputy General Manager of Sun Hung Kai Development (China), said: “We take pride in having staged SHKP Vertical Run for Charity in the spirit of Building Homes with Heart for six straight years. By blending sport and charity we expect more people will build physical and mental strength while playing a part in improving medical care for children.”

Races for top internationals and people wanting to run with family and friends

SHKP Vertical Run for Charity - The Race to Shanghai IFC is the only internationally recognized vertical running event in Shanghai and has attracted many stair-climbing enthusiasts over the years.  Runners took part in Elite, Individual, Team/Corporate Relay and Fun Climb Type A, Type B and Type C races so participants of varying ability could enjoy the fun of vertical running.  Fun Climb entrants could run with family, friends, children or their loved ones to create special memories.

The 2017 Vertical World Circuit covers ten landmark buildings in cities like Dubai, London, New York, Sydney and Osaka.  The Shanghai IFC race magnetized 25 elite runners from around the world to compete for points towards the final result.  Mark Bourne came first in the men’s Elite race in 7 minutes and 44 seconds while Suzy Walsham won the women’s race in 9 minutes and 8 seconds.

The Team / Corporate Relays saw close-fought competition among nearly 40 teams representing renowned mainland and international companies and organizations, with Shanghai Kai Shing Property Management Services coming first in 8 minutes 59 seconds, E-House China’s runner team second in 9 minutes 13 seconds and Shanghai IFC Mall third in 10 minutes 20 seconds.  Individual men’s and women’s races attracted some 1,000 entrants and outnumbered other categories. They were taken by He Liangliang in 8 minutes 37 seconds and Huang Yuhong in 11 minutes 25 seconds.

Fun carnival with Caring Ambassadors and event mascot supporting charitable causes

The event that combines sport and charity elements has gained widespread support. In addition to Taiwanese singer Valen Hsu, Hong Kong singer Gillian Chung, actors David Wang and Li Xian, up-and-comers Wang Zixuan and Pang Hanchen were named Caring Ambassadors.  The budding actors cheered the runners on race day and brought popular Chinese cartoon character Big Ear Tutu to the carnival zone where they greeted children and played all kinds of games.  This year’s cute bunny mascot kept runners company during the day to keep spirits up.  It also took on fun challenges with runners and their family and friends in a sporty day with healthy messages and cheers.
