Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) established the SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation to nurture the young generation in keeping with the company’s ideal of Building Homes with Heart.  The Foundation promotes educational development in Hong Kong and has extended its reach to the mainland including subsidizing disadvantaged students in the nation’s poor western region to pursue higher education.  Additionally, the Foundation has helped bring clean water to a rural community to improve living conditions for local families.

Setting in remote, mountainous areas with a dry climate and little rain, Lintao county and Ningyuan town in Dingxi, Ganzu are among the poorest regions in the nation.  The farming community resorted to storing rainwater in cellars, but it was still scarce and of poor quality making life difficult and stunting economic and educational development.

The SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation established a scholarship programme at Lintao Middle School in Dingxi, Gansu in 2015, enabling over 200 financially disadvantaged  but deserving students to complete three years of high school.  SHKP Independent Non-Executive Director Leung Nai-pang, Norman and Foundation representatives visited the school recently.  The delegation encouraged the scholarship recipients to study hard and aim high, telling them they could be eligible for Foundation bursaries at close to 20 mainland universities if they did well in college entrance exams, so their prospects for higher education would not be dampened by their families’ financial limitations.

The delegation also visited rural families in Lintao and Ningyuan where the Foundation sponsored a project to pipe in water, so residents no longer needed to carry potable water from mountain streams every day to supply their needs.  The project helps 10 farming villages in Lintao and Ningyuan bringing adequate drinking water to over 1,000 families.
