Sun Hung Kai Properties scholarships give opportunity to employees’ sons and daughters

2017-02-17

Ten young people whose parents work at Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) or its subsidiaries have benefited from the latest SHKP Group Undergraduate Scholarships.  Caring for employees and their families is a priority for the company, and this ongoing programme lets the children of staff pursue university studies without financially burdening their parents.

Three things to expect and three to spend time on

SHKP Chairman and Managing Director Raymond Kwok recently met the young recipients and encouraged them to get the most from university by studying hard, getting involved in extracurricular activities and staying open to new ideas.  He told the students to be ready for three things and spend ample time on three more: “Be ready to lose, toil and learn; as effort and dedication today will pay rewards for a lifetime.  And spend enough time on exercise, caring for family – particularly parents – and dealing with people.  Remember too to take care of your health and keep regular hours whether in school or work.”

Chan Ming-him is taking a Bachelor of Laws at the City University of Hong Kong.  This is his second time receiving sponsorship from SHKP, following a study programme in Belgium on an SHKP-AFS Intercultural Exchanges scholarship during high school.  He said: “That year changed me.  I spread my horizons and realized that anything was possible.  No matter what life was like before, there are still opportunities if you work hard enough.” His mother, Chau Yuet-hung, is an attendant at Wilson Parking.

Ming-him wasn’t doing well in school and spent much of his time in Internet cafes until he recognized that he had to catch up.  His effort was rewarded with excellent results in the HKDSE that got him into his preferred course, bringing him a step closer to a new stage in life.  He said: “I am very grateful for the way SHKP supports its staff.  This scholarship means I don’t need to rely so much on part-time jobs and I have more time to learn, enjoy campus life and better myself to become a worthwhile member of society.”

The SHKP Group Undergraduate Scholarship scheme was established in 2010 and has since helped over 60 children of employees attend institutions such as The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  Recipients have studied medicine, engineering, law, economics and finance, journalism and more.  Offspring of employees can also apply for SHKP-AFS Intercultural Exchanges scholarships, which have taken young beneficiaries to study overseas since 2003.
