Raymond Kwok's speech at the Sun Hung Kai Properties Nobel Laureates Distinguished Lecture

Raymond Kwok - Chairman & Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties

Good afternoon Professor Stiglitz, Professor Sung, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.  I am delighted to welcome all of you to the latest Sun Hung Kai Properties Nobel Laureates Distinguished Lecture.

We began these lectures in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004 and they have been very successful, so I must give special credit to the university’s vice-chancellor and faculty.  I should also take the opportunity to congratulate this august institution on its 50th anniversary this year.

The series is nearing its tenth anniversary and has so far brought 28 Nobel laureates and noted scholars to share their knowledge and extensive experience.  Past lectures have spanned diverse fields such as medicine, chemistry, physics, and economics, and the previous lecture on medicine took place just last month.  Today’s lecture will revisit economics in the Asian context.

Sun Hung Kai Properties puts great emphasis on corporate social responsibility and this Nobel lecture series is part of our commitment to promoting education and life-long learning.  The lectures also complement our other initiatives such as the SHKP Book Club and scholarship programmes with the Chinese University like the one we announced last week.

There are many young people in the audience today including students at the Chinese University, and we hope that this lecture will enrich young minds and instill an international perspective.  I’m sure the new ideas and insights gained today will help promote the economic and social development of Hong Kong.

Our guest of honour today is internationally-renowned Nobel laureate in economics Professor Joseph Stiglitz, who will talk about the financial crisis that began in 2007 and evaluate its economic implications for the Asian region.  I am sure that what Professor Stiglitz has to say today will give us greater insight into the path of our economic development. And for our students here, I hope this can be a great source of inspiration for your personal growth and professional development in future.

Sun Hung Kai Properties is always working for a better Hong Kong, and we see this lecture series as just another facet of our belief in building homes with heart for the benefit of all.

Thank you.
