The SHKP Volunteer Team was recently commended by SHKP Vice Chairman and Volunteer Team captain Raymond Kwok and Deputy Director of Social Welfare Fung Pak-yan for charitable service. The volunteers put in an impressive 30,000 service hours last year, and some of the stalwarts were presented with awards at the fifth anniversary SHKP Volunteer Team Recognition Day for their contributions to society.
Contributing to a caring society
Mr Kwok praised the volunteers for their contributions over the past five years, saying that their enthusiasm for helping people echoes SHKP's commitment to social responsibility. He encouraged the volunteers to continue their good deeds and work closely with charities to build a caring society.
Service commitment
The SHKP Volunteer Team has put in 86,000 service hours over the past five years. A total of 155 volunteers were honoured this year; 60 of whom put in over 200 annual service hours each. Lau Yuk-chun topped the Highest Service Hours rankings at 736, while Mak Hing-cheong with 1,929 hours won for Five-Year Highest Service Hours, a new category this year. NGOs, the Social Welfare Department and SHKP management praised the volunteers' commitment.
The volunteers help the needy through various programmes, often applying their professional knowledge. Some, for example, trained former mental patients to fix up their accommodation in a second annual home-repair workshop, and others helped seniors displaced by redevelopment to select, check, decorate and clean their new homes.
Sincere help
Team leader Michelle Leung said that the team's membership and service hours have risen continuously, which shows growing enthusiasm. She added that the team would continue to serve people sincerely in its sixth year, trying to help build social harmony.
