SHKP volunteers help in fundraising walk for the visually impaired

23 November 2005

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) is committed to Hong Kong and takes its social responsibilities seriously, with the SHKP Volunteer Team supporting various initiatives. SHKP volunteers recently helped with the 'Let There Be Light' fundraising walk staged by the Hong Kong Society for the Blind.

The slogan of this year's event was Walk Together on the Rainbow Path. Official guests at the kick off included Director of Social Welfare Paul Tang, Legislator Patrick Lau, Sham Shui Po District Council Chairman Tam Kwok-kiu and canto-pop artist Leo Ku. The walk had two parts; first with one sighted person leading another wearing vision-impairing goggles and the second with the sighted person leading a visually impaired partner. The idea was to let sighted people experience what the visually impaired face every day and build understanding between able and disabled people.

SHKP volunteers provided support for the event, including registering participants, distributing certificates and souvenirs and generally making sure thing went smoothly. The 100 top fundraisers joined a banquet after the walk and ate blindfolded; again to experience what the visually impaired have to deal with. SHKP was also the lead sponsor of the event and made a monetary contribution to the Society for the Blind.

SHKP supports a variety of community programmes. The SHKP Volunteer Team was set up in 2003 to provide a vehicle for SHKP staff interested in helping the less fortunate, and it now has over 1,000 members.
