Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) is widening its commitment to Building Homes with Heart by taking part in a community initiative to assist elderly residents of Shek Kip Mei Estate move to new homes in preparation for the estate's redevelopment. Members of the SHKP Volunteer Team will make use of their expertise in building and property management to help the seniors choose and inspect their flats, as well as doing basic cleaning and decorating.
The project is being organized by SHKP, the Social Welfare Department's Sham Shui Po office and the Neighbourhood Action-Advice Council, as a cooperative effort between the private sector, government and community organizations. The initiative started with a ceremony at which SHKP Volunteer Team leader Michelle Leung and 70 members promised their assistance before getting down to the task at hand.
The SHKP Volunteer Team will be helping seniors with flat selection and inspection, and assisting them with the actual move. They will also lend a hand repairing defects and doing basic decorations and cleaning. Team members will visit the elderly before and after their move, to ensure they are settled into their new homes. Over 200 households are expected benefit from the project.
Ms Leung said that helping elderly Shek Kip Mei residents settle in new flats is part SHKP commitment to Building Homes with Heart. The SHKP Volunteer Team was formed in 2003 and now has over 1,000 members. Its purpose is to coordinate and encourage staff volunteer efforts on behalf of the needy in Hong Kong.
