SHKP Volunteer Team helps raise funds for the blind

11 December 2003

Nearly 100 members of the Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Volunteer Team recently took part in the 'Let There Be Light' charity walk organized by the Hong Kong Society for the Blind, reflecting the developer's commitment to community service. SHKP also contributed $100,000 in sponsorship for the walk. The proceeds will go to the Society's Parents Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired Children and Mobile Eye Screening Centre.

This was more than the usual fundraiser; it was also a companion walk for sighted people and the visually impaired. The sighted participants wore special glasses to reduce their vision and walked for 45 minutes guided by a visually impaired person, to understand what it is like first hand. SHKP Volunteer Team members helped to lead the participants and provided coordination during the walk.

In another initiative, the SHKP Volunteer Team was second runner up in the 'Campaign Evergreen Scarf-knitting Programme' organized recently by the Social Welfare Department (SWD). A total of 477 organizations and families including more than 16,000 people took part. As a result, the SWD collected over 40,000 scarves for needy people in the community. Over 450 members of the SHKP Volunteer Team joined the programme and knitted about 1,500 scarves.

SHKP's Head of Internal Affairs Philip Wu said, "Members of our Volunteer Team participate in various volunteer activities on different scales, showing their sincerity and desire to help others. Looking forward, the Team will continue taking part in voluntary activities to help the less fortunate and contribute to the community."
